This is the sanitized copy of a proposal to an equipment manufacturer in the commercial kitchen equipment industry. If your firm is thinking of using the internet, or wondering how they might use it someday, there are undoubtedly sparks to light your thinking contained here.

To whom it may concern,

PROPOSAL: That your firm establish a world wide web (www) presence on the internet which will serve as an international 24 hour perday active marketing tool and communication center.Your internet presence should be located at an address (URL) containing a unique "domain name" which reflects your companies name and/or product. (i.e. www.your-name.com if it is still available.) These web pages, accessible to all 45,000,000 internet users, would present your complete product line and show showing:

  • Company and industry overview pages with historical footnotes.
  • Discussions of particular benefits of your company and products.
  • Sales and specification sheets (full color) for each product. (Catalog pages)
  • Up to date retail price lists.
  • Special promotion information.
  • New products.
  • Dealer/distributor lists with a search engine.
(A search engine is a device located on a web page that allows finding specific user-entered data by area. i.e.,The customer enters "Kansas City" is provided with a list of all the dealers in Kansas City; or the customer may enter "Smith"and all the dealers with Smith in their name will appear.)
  • Consultant lists with search engine.
  • Registration page for customers to leave contact information.
(This would be a "Live Form" with blank spaces to be filled out by your customers. The collected data would be E-mailed immediately to your address.)
  • Internationally oriented and foreign language pages.
(Since your web pages will be accessible 24 hours a day from anywhere in the world at no added cost to you.)

Your web site could also include "Password Protected" (access controlled) pages with:
  • Your dealer relationship policy statements.
  • General dealer pricing.
  • Special large-customer information pages. (dealer groups, Sysco, Maines, etc.)
  • Information specifically designed for your sales force. Other specialized pages designed to increase marketing efficiency and increase sales might include:
  • Your sales force listing with email links accessible to dealers.
(The dealer "clicks" on the link and an email message is automatically sent to the salesman.)
  • Live forms for ordering with secure data transmission.
(A customer anywhere in the world 24 hours a day could order products with a credit card and have it shipped the same day without even touching a phone just by filling in the blanks on the form.)
Other useful ideas might include:
  • Offering a "FREE" dealer/distributor web page which could contain whatever information the customer wants.
  • A web page written for a dealer/distributor could be used by your firm to conduct a live nationwide sales presentation or conference to all that dealer's locations.
  • Space for holding live nation-wide sales meetings.
(Within a few months these could be live voice and real-time video.)
The usefulness of utilizing a web site for service are innumerable. Service pages containing drawings and parts ordering information.
  • Parts list-price lists by product with a search engine.
(The customer could enter the serial number and model number. The parts list for that unit would appear.)
  • Frequently asked question (FAQ) pages with service tips for your products.

  • Live forms for ordering parts with secure data transmission.
  • Live "chat" areas for resolving service problems in at a distance (in Norway for instance) without telephone contact or added costs.
(Chat areas allow an individual anywhere in the world to type information onto their computer which appears on your screen. You can then type answers or other questions right back. Like holding a conversation by keyboard.)
  • Sketches could be transmitted instantly without needing long distance phone connection.
(Just draw and scan. Like having a direct fax connection to someone's screen.)
  • Password protected pages accessible only to service agencies with policies and prices.

Another marketing tool might be to set up an e-mail communication center using "auto responders." This will allow information acquisition from the company 24 hours a day automatically. A center like this would include which makes a full range of printed information instantly and frequently asked question FAQ sheets on service issues for instance.

(Auto responders are messages held at your web site that are automatically sent to anyone sending you e-mail containing a specific key word. For instance the key word phrase "service # (where # is your model number) could automatically cause a several thousand word document to be e-mailed to a customer in less than a second 24 hours a day.)

Your web site should be advertised via the various promotional methods available exclusively on the internet, placing links on other's pages, banner advertising, etc. (i.e., if someone attempts to find out any information on the web concerning restaurant design, commercial kitchen equipment, pizza baking, toasting, etc., they should see an advertisement which when "clicked" immediately connects that person to your web page.)

The above are some beginning thoughts. Actually, the internet environment is constantly growing and improving. New features become available daily. New ideas will become practical next week that no one has thought of today. As a Certified Internet Marketing Consultant I help companies like yours increase profits by developing methods for utilizing and staying abreast of this powerful new marketing tool. I maintain the exact knowledge base and suite of hardware, software, consulting, educational and design services which can position companies such as yours perfectly with an internet marketing strategy, at the most competitive rates available.

From recent articles we've all seen in Business Week and other publications, it is obvious that having a position at the leading edge of this electronic phenomenon will provide greater market penetration and name recognition. By its nature an internet presence will improve customer relations and service, it will provide "food" for all sorts of free publicity for Holman, it will save time, it will present unique international marketing opportunities, and the costs are minimal.

The total annual fees payable to service providers for a package that includes every idea presented above would be less than $1,000. Since you are already at this site, your added hardware costs could be zero. The learning curve for your staff to make profitable use of your site will be measured in minutes, in fact, the largest time factor will be initial consulting and planning sessions.

The contacts between our companies can be handled by phone and fax. Distance is a non-issue in this industry.

Thank you for your time & attention.

Sincerely,

Jay Holman
